Orientalism

Let's clarify that the term Orientalism refers to an imitation or depiction of aspects of Eastern cultures by artists living in the West. During the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th, the western artistic creation has largely been nourished by "l'Orient" (Middle Eastern cultures and people), which became an established theme. But has Orientalism depicted the reality of Eastern cultures or, on the contrary, hasn't it contributed to propagate a prejudiced interpretation of Eastern people? Has Orientalism expanded myths and legends? Is it possible that it was mirror to Western culture itself, an expression of its hidden or illicit aspects? Whatever are the answers to these questions, Orientalism provide us with a huge amount of amazing paintings describing scenes of dance which feed our imagination.
